The S.C. Department of Natural Resources recently conducted one of the most successful youth turkey hunts in the history of the agency with eight gobblers bagged with four misses. It was all part of a Take One Make One (TOMO) hunt conducted on Youth Turkey Day on March 27.
“Thirteen new or novice hunters participated,” said S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Sgt. Lynwood Kearse, “One young lady was not only on her first hunt, but bagged one turkey with a double beard.”
All the young hunters and their mentors retreated to an overnight stay at Milleree Hunt Club in lower Richland County. The youth hunted the next day on the Marsh Tract WMA in Marion County as well as privately held areas of Mill Creek, Beckam’s Swamp, Big Lake and Milleree. The hunt was followed with an afternoon at the 26th Annual Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia.
There is no application fee or license required (unless you are 16 or 17) and these hunts are available at no cost to the participants.  Youth who are 16 or 17 years of age are required to have a Junior Sportsman’s License.
For information on other TOMO youth hunts scheduled around the state, contact Kearse at (803) 734-4011 in Columbia or send an e-mail to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). The TOMO program is specifically targeting youth and young adults who have not experienced a previous shooting or hunting activity.
