Georgia WMAs Suffering Flood Issues - Hunters Need to Plan Ahead

Hunters wishing to access Tuckahoe Wildlife Management Area, located in Screven County, are urged to do some pre-hunt scouting before their hunting trip due to recent heavy flooding in the area.  Approximately 4,000-5,000 upland acres of the 15,000+ acre area are available for hunting, but the flooding has caused limited accessibility from the slough east to the river.

“Even with the limited accessibility, there are still many available hunting areas,” says Tuckahoe Area Manager Howard Pope.  “It is safe to hunt the area, but we are urging hunters to plan ahead for the conditions to maximize their success.”

Tuckahoe WMA is located near Sylvania in central east Georgia.  Hunting opportunities during the 2009-2010 hunting season include deer, turkey, small game and doves.  The next hunting opportunity is a sign-in deer hunt scheduled to begin on Thanksgiving Day.  Nearly 300 people participate in this hunt each year. 

Other affected WMAs include Big Hammock WMA, Yuchi WMA and more.  Hunters using these areas, and all others, should use caution on any stream crossings and beware of potentially slippery driving conditions.
