Saturday, March 27 is Youth Turkey Hunt Day in South Carolina not Sunday, March 28 as indicated in the recently released 2010 Spring Turkey Brochure.  The date for this youth hunting day is correct in the 2009-2010 Hunting and Freshwater Fishing Rules and Regulations brochure (pages 37 and 54) and in turkey regulations found on the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website.  Youth turkey hunt day is always the Saturday before April 1, said Charles Ruth, Deer and Wild Turkey Project Supervisor, however, the recently released brochure incorrectly states the date as being on Sunday, March 28.
The youth turkey hunt day is designed to encourage youths age 17 and under who are accompanied by a properly licensed adult (age 21 and older) to hunt turkeys. Only the youth can take or attempt to take turkeys in Game Zones 1-5, however, the general turkey season is already open on that date in Game Zone 6 so there is no restriction on adult participation. Tagging requirements remain in place for this special youth day.  Turkey tags are free and can be ordered online at http://www.dnr.sc.gov/turkeytags/ or found over the counter at DNR offices and some local businesses that were formerly Big Game Check Stations.
